A Hummingbird in hand

A Hummingbird in hand

On a rainy day in June of 2008 I saw a hummingbird just sitting on the rail of our porch for at least 20 minutes. If you know hummingbirds, you know that they don't 'just sit' in one place for that amount of time.... so I walked outside and right up to it and it didn't fly away. I picked it up to make sure it was okay. It didn't move, but it also didn't seem hurt. It was light as a feather! It almost appeared as if it was asleep. I tried to feed it from the hummingbird feeder, but it wasn't interested. I put it on the rim of the feeder and it slid with one foot into the sugar water. Well, that woke it up! It chirped at me in annoyance (as only hummingbirds can - HA!) and tried his wings. They seem to work fine and it hovered
for a couple of seconds, scolded me again with a final chirp and flew away. Made me laugh, both because it was funny that I got scolded, but also because I was relieved that it was okay. Story and photo from Kerstin E.
